Practical information

Visa applicants must present themselves in person at their given appointment.

Prepare your visit/appointment :

The following must be gathered BEFORE your visit :

  • A passport in good condition, issued no more than 10 years ago, the validity of which extends at least three months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen Area, including at least two blank pages;
  • 2 visa application forms completely filled out
  • 2 recent photographs in accordance with the ISO/IEC standard (pdf).
  • The supporting documents (originals + copy) specific to your situation and purpose of travel;
  • Cash or credit card in order to pay the Fees
  • The fees are given in euros, but the French Embassy only accepts local currency (NOK). Please check this link in order to know the correct amount requested.
  • A prepaid (155 nok in stamps) self-addressed envelope (size of the envelope 148mm x 121mm) if the passport has to be shipped back to you.

NB: Make sure that you come with all original documents AND a copy.

Providing your Biometric Data

All visas issued by France are biometric visas.

Any visa applicant aged 12 or older is required in person.

The following biometric data will be required: a photograph ISO/IEC standard (pdf) and 10 fingerprints, taken digitally.

However, it is also possible to have your previous biometric data re-used if you were issued a Schengen visa within at least the previous 59 months.

Advantages of biometrics

Biometric technology provides you with protection: the ability to compare your biometric data makes it easier to identify you. Should your travel documents be lost or stolen, biometric technology will protect you from identity theft and fraudulent use of your passport.

Collecting your passport

You can collect your passport yourself or have it sent by prepaid mail (180 nok for an 148mm x 121mm sized envelope).

Follow your request

You can follow the progress of your request from your France-Visas account, under "My requests".

Visa requirements for official passport holders

Visas are issued to holders of official passports by the visa sections of the consular section of the French Embassy from Monday to Friday between 9:00am to 12:30pm.

Visas issued to holders of official passports (i.e. related to their functions) are free of charge.

For more information, please contact us: ambafrance.oslo@diplomatie.gouv.fr

Representation of African countries

Most African countries, with the exception of the Central African Republic, have recently introduced biometric visa systems online or at the border. Therefore there is a risk that the non-biometric visa issued by France may not allow entry into these countries and that the applicant is obliged to apply for a visa at the border and will be charged for it.
We invite you to contact the competent authorities of the country of destination in order to apply for a visa or to ensure that the issuance of a visa at the border is possible taking into account your nationality.
