Apply for a visa in Tanzania to visit France
Visa applications submitted in Tanzania are examined by the French Embassy in Dar es Salaam; only the Embassy is authorised to take decisions about visas. You can set up an appointment at the visa section here.
From 7 November 2024, TLScontact's has been appointed to welcome the public, receive their applications and return the passports in its visa application centre located in Dar es Salaam. You may submit your visa application up to 180 days prior to your planned dates of travel. You are strongly advised to allow at least 20 working days of processing delays.
Once visa applications have been transferred to the consular authority, the processing time is 15 working days. This instruction delay processing time is given as general guidelines and will vary according to different factors.
Important information notice from Schengen Member States
- According to the Schengen visa code, the validity of a travel document shall extend at least three months (90 days) after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen Member States.
- According to an official notification from the Tanzanian authorities issued to all diplomatic missions, all Tanzanian passports - except the new East African Community biometric e-Passport - will be rendered invalid from 1st of February 2020.
- The Schengen Member States therefore wish to inform the Tanzanian public that if their travel plans extend past 31st of October 2019, ONLY the new East African Community biometric e-Passport can be accepted for Schengen visa applications.

Certain categories of visa applicants who do not wish to make use of the service provided by TLScontact still have the option of applying for their visas directly at the French Consulate in Dar es Salaam, known as direct appointments. This possibility only applies to applicants for short stay visas "spouse of a French national" and "family member of a European national".
Appointment waiting times
Waiting times vary depending on the number of applicants and the season. Applicants are therefore asked to arrange their appointment at least :
- 15 days prior to departure for a short-stay visa,
- 1 month for a long-stay visa.
Applications can not be made more than 6 months before your planned departure.

TLScontact service fees
The basic service fee (39€) is set in euros and is collected in local currency. The fees are not refundable unless the applicant decides not to submit his file before the collection of biometric data.
Additional fees are also offered to visa applicants.

Personal appearance
The personal appearance of every applicant is required. They must come in person. All documents submitted to the visa department have to be written in French or English. If not, they have to be accompanied by a certified translation.
Prepare your visit
Visa appointments can only be booked via the local outsourcing partner TLScontact. As of 7th novembre 2024, the service fee must be paid when making an appointment on the TLScontact website. Select a time and date at your convenience to submit your documents at the TLScontact Visa application center. The available time slots are highlighted in blue.
At your appointment, please bring :
- Your appointment confirmation document (to be printed) ;
- Your passport ;
- Your documents presented in order according to the list of requirements ;
- The means of payment of the visa fees and any optional services fees.
NB : Submitting a complete application does not guarantee that the consular authorities will grant you a visa.
Biometrics
All visas issued by France are biometric visas.
Applicants who are over 12 years old are required to appear in person at the time of their first application. The following biometric identifiers are collected : a photograph and 10 fingerprints, taken flat and digitized. However, it is possible to retrieve your biometric data if a previous Schengen visa has been issued to you less than 59 months ago.
Children under 12 years of age are not required to provide the fingerprints. Short stay Schengen visa application may be submitted by the child’s parent/legal guardian. The ISO/IEC format photograph of the child will be scanned.
Security information
For security reasons, visa applicants are not permitted to bring any objects deemed to be a security risk for the Visa Application Centre such as :
- Any sharp objects ;
- Weapon or weapon-like objects.
The use of mobile phones, cameras and other video recording devices is strictly forbidden.
Security checks will be performed before you are admitted to the premises.
You can follow the progress of your application from your France-Visas account, under "My applications".
Once informed of your passport return at the TLScontact centre, you will be invited to collect it without appointment. You will need :
- Your application checklist ;
- A valid ID ;
- The birth certificate of your child/children if you wish to retrieve his/her/their passport(s).
If you wish to designate a third party to pick up your passport, your representative should bring :

- A photocopy of your valid ID ;
- Original and photocopy of his/her own passport, driving license or other valid ID ;
- A written autorisation letter signed by you.

Visas issued to holders of official passports (i.e. related to their functions) are free of charge.
African State representation
France represents these following African countries for short stay visas:
